Treetop Adventure

Part of the fun of living somewhere new is that every day is an adventure. Every outing is a chance to discover something. On a recent trip, we ventured out to North Tahoe Regional Park, chasing rumors of a zipline. What we found was an aerial adventure park with 87 tree platforms, 30 ziplines, 9 different courses, and 54 obstacles. All it took was a glance.  Ten-year-old Anaya was all in.  Maris, age 3, will have to wait a few years to venture into the treetops, so we hiked the nature trails beneath the course and took action photos while Eben and Anaya spent a few hours monkeying in the trees.  The obstacles are scattered through the forest, reached by rope bridges and ziplines.  They range from walking a swaying surfboard to traversing a climbing wall hanging between two trees.  Eben and Anaya quickly worked their way up from the beginner courses to the most difficult obstacles.  The safety gear was comfortable and easy to use, and the instructors gave clear, simple instructions and demonstrations until everyone could click in and out of the ropes with ease.  This is a great activity for adventurous kids and parents with nerve.  If only part of the group is up for an aerial adventure, there are plenty of other ways to while away a few hours at North Tahoe Regional Park, including disc golf, an astroturf soccer field, a fitness trail, several playgrounds, trails for hiking and running, and three dog parks, including a one-acre play area called “The Outback.”  There are picnic tables throughout the park if you want to bring your own snacks or lunch.  You can hike to the park from Happy Cabin, ride bikes, or hop in the car for a short drive.  Reservations are recommended. Visit the park's website for more information.
